Redefining Innovation: Programming Complex, Immersive Simulations in Second Life
Since launching in 2003, Second Life has continued to evolve in terms of capability and sophistication,
while the foundation design elements have remained largely the same. Sensing these limitations - and opportunities - three educators came together and formed MUVERs LLC,
a company that designs and develops sophisticated interactive capabilities
previously unheard of in Second Life. Join us for an exciting discussion with Cathy Walker (SL:
PadlurownCanoe Dibou), John Miller (SL: JS Vavoom), and Scott Merrick (SL:
ScottMerrick Oh) who will share their experiences with the complex, immersive simulations in
Second Life, and in particular, their simulation for the medical training
industry. This session promises to be one of our most forward-thinking yet, as
we explore how their approach to SIM design can potentially change the way
Second Life is used as a training environment.

Nearing 50 yrs on this planet, Cathy is quite serious when she says "I'm not sure what I want to be when I grow-up." Always changing and always developing, she inspires others with her passion for life-long learning and sharing. All three of her children follow in her path - her two daughters are 3rd and 4th grade teachers and her son is currently seeking a degree to teach and coach.
As Co-Founder and Project Manager of MUVErs, Kathy strives to provide educational content and training for the Second Life platform and Web 2.0 training, consultation, and implementation support. She also serves as Chief Operating Officer for MUVE Market, a company that creates MUVEs and serious games for commercial, government, and educational concerns in a variety of engines and platforms.
In addition to her work with MUVERS, Cathy volunteers as a Second Life ISTE Docent, and is on the State Educational Technology Committee, Diocese of Little Rock.
Scott Merrick
SL: ScottMerrick Oh
Scott Merrick is Lower School Technology Coordinator at University School of Nashville (TN), and co-founder of and educational consultant/trainer for MUVErs LLC.
His spotty past (musician, actor, author, librarian, bartender, and cruise ship assistant director) may inform his unflagging interest in all things new and helpful. He is the founder of the SL "Kindness Freaks" group and an ISTE Docent of long standing. He maintains numerous blogs, and viewers may be most interested in Oh!VirtualLearning!
IRL (in real life) Scott likes to play and listen to music with his talented children, partake of his lovely wife's gourmet dinners, and help his K-4 students and adult teaching colleagues make sense of technology in education, learning with them all the while.
John Miller
SL: JS Vavoom
John Miller, RN, BSN, MN, is a co-founder of MUVErs LLC and a RN nursing faculty at Tacoma Community College, in Tacoma, WA. He uses Second Life, 3D interactive objects, simulations and interactions with support groups in his courses. Through his company MUVErs, his team provides easy solutions to education in Second Life, which are interactive, engaging, apply information learned, and require critical decision making.
